Leading with Confidence in Uncertain Times
I saw firsthand during my 13 years as director of communications for The Ford Field & River Club how important leadership is to a club.
When I was first hired, the club had just undergone turnover from the developer and was being managed by a board of directors. It was a time of transition, full of uncertainty and questions. Members wanted to know what the future held, employees were adjusting to new leadership, and change was unavoidable.
In moments like these, strong leadership makes all the difference.
One of the most impactful decisions the board made was hiring a professional general manager, someone with the experience and steady leadership needed to navigate the transition. His ability to set a clear direction, build trust, and maintain stability helped lead us through the change.
Strong leadership can guide teams through uncertainty. Here’s how to lead through change:
Communicate the vision: Clearly explain the “why” behind the change. People are more likely to embrace a transition when they understand its purpose.
Address concerns: Change brings fear, and fear thrives in silence. Create open lines of communication, listen to concerns, and offer reassurance.
Be adaptable: No transition goes exactly as planned. Flexibility allows you to adjust and keep moving forward.
The most effective leaders don’t just manage change—they inspire confidence through it.
