I’m Giving You These Comments

Some time ago, I was grappling with how to effectively motivate my GSU students when I stumbled upon an article by Daniel Coyle. The article highlighted a powerful phrase that had a surprising impact on student performance:

“I’m giving you these comments because I have very high expectations and I know that you can reach them.”

Intrigued, I decided to test it out. I started using this phrase in both my professional and personal interactions, and you know what?

It really works.

By setting high expectations and clearly communicating them, you not only challenge people to grow, but also make them feel valued and supported.

One particular instance stands out to me. One semester, a student said that she grew up in a household where her opinion didn’t matter and that she wasn’t expected to strive for much. When I said, “Well, in this classroom I have high expectations and I know you can reach them,” her eyes lit up and her smile was as bright as the sun. She knew she mattered and that she could make a difference.

So, why not give it a try yourself? Next time you’re giving feedback, remind those around you of the high expectations you hold and your confidence in their ability to meet them.

I’m giving you these comments because I have very high expectations, and I know that you can reach them.
