What Frame Are You Choosing?

“You pick your endings and your beginnings. You get to pick the frame, you know? Maybe you don’t choose what’s in the picture, but you decide on the frame.”

—John Green, “Turtles All the Way Down”

I love this quote because it applies to everything in life. You get to decide your frame—no matter where you started from or where you are on your journey.

  • If you are a mason, you get to decide if you are just laying a brick for a wall, or if you are building a cathedral.
  • If you are a CEO, you get to decide if you are just running a business, or if you are inspiring people to do their best work and growing new leaders.
  • If you are a parent, you get to decide if you are just reading a book to your child, or if you are sparking his imagination and potential.

It all depends on the frame you choose.

How do you frame the message for your business or organization?

  • Are you just a pool cleaner, or do you enable families to enjoy more time together in a backyard oasis?
  • Are you just an orthodontist, or do you make people more confident through a bright smile?
  • Are you just an accountant, or do you make people’s lives easier by filing taxes for them?

It all depends on the frame you choose.

How we frame a message when we communicate is essential. But more essential is how we frame every day we are given.

What is your frame of choice?
